As someone who eventually wants to illustrate card and board games, I decided to start a project that would get me started on the path towards accomplishing that. I decided to recreate the major elements of the Clue, like the characters and cover of the box. Everything I’ve made in this project is based directly on the version of ClueI have in my game collection at home. Any text you see in the final product is also taken directly from the game, since my goal was to redesign it, not recreate it!
Before really diving into the characters, I wanted to start on the cover of the box. I liked the idea of having a muted analogous color scheme. This greenish color kind of reminds me of trench coats and classic detective vibes. I also wanted the mansion to be a bit smaller. I know that it’s supposed to be a giant, fancy mansion, but when you play the game, there are only nine rooms to navigate. I don’t know about you, but the cover on the box I have at home makes the mansion look more like Hogwarts, with a ton of crazy wings and towers! Instead, I decided to make the place a bit more modest.
Mr. Green
Mr. Green is portrayed as a “playboy”. I think of him as handsome and witty, and probably popular with the ladies. I really wanted to rework his hair and facial features; I felt like the hairstyle he has in the original version is getting outdated for what I think a lady’s man would wear today. I thought his green coat and white dress shirt was a great outfit choice, though, and didn’t really make any changes there!
Mrs. Peacock
I think of Mrs. Peacock as a bit flamboyant. Maybe she has a flare for the expensive things in life, and might be a bit over the top when it comes to handling stressfull situations. That being said, I thought the outfit choice for her in the original version was a bit much—it reminded me more of a prom dress than an evening gown! So instead, I went for something that seemed a little more simple in cut and pattern, but still super fancy. To add to that expensive taste I thought she might have, I added some extra jewelry.
Professor Plum
Professor Plum was definitely a nerdy intellect in my mind, and I switched up pretty much everything from the original design. Instead of a blaizer and striped shirt, I went for a vest instead. I also decided he should have thin, metal frames for his glasses and completely slicked-back hair.
Dr. Orchid
I think of Dr. Orchid as very smart, but also very reserved. Perhaps she’s the type to listen to everyone else before speaking her mind, if she plans on sharing that information at all. I loved the outfit and the style of her hair in the original design, so I honestly didn’t want to change her that much!
Colonel Mustard
The character description for Col. Mustard refers to him as the “Alpha Male”, and I rolled with that idea. I image Col. Mustard as someone who would always want to have the last word in a conversation, and will probably take any chance to tell an interesting story about himself. I decided to fancy up his outfit just a little with an intersting jacket and sharper haircut.
Miss Scarlett
Miss Scarlett is the flirtatious, beautiful woman that knows how to get what she wants or information she needs. She’s deceptively strong and knows how to take care of herself in a precarious situation. I really liked the overall design of Miss Scarlett and decided to keep it simiar to the orginal with a classy red dress and wavy blonde hair.
